Life Is Full Of Such Disappointments

Thirteen things this Thursday that I have read, watched, listened to or otherwise found noteworthy.

The most popular link last time was this commentary on liking January, with Gerald's parsnips second.

  1. Are you in a computer literacy bubble? Probably.
  2. My obsession with Susan Orlean's fashion has only been enhanced by this closet tour. All her shoes are in identical stackable boxes with a photograph of the shoe stuck on the outside!
  3. A beautiful and nostalgic look at the animation craft on display in One Hundred and One Dalmations.
  4. An enjoyable daily logic puzzle. I occasionally quibble with it (sometimes it says I can't know an answer yet when I do) but still fun.
  5. These days especially, I just need a nice story about a man taking his Uber driver tobogganing for the first time.
  6. I am pleasantly surprised that Bob Ross Inc is selling the great man's paintings for charity rather than profit.
  7. Practical, non-judgemental advice for managing anxiety. I agree with the writer, it is deeply annoying that exercise helps, but life is full of such disappointments.
  8. A well-designed and easy-to-follow guide to mastering HTML and making your own website from scratch.
  9. I'm very into this creepy art.
  10. This was an interesting documentary about the British tradition of pigeon fancying. Thanks to this, I've now got a half-baked theory that the solution to the male loneliness epidemic we hear so much about is a renaissance for ye olde hobbies like keeping pigeons, growing massive leeks and building model aeroplanes.
  11. Hank and John Green did a deep dive into what really happened in 2014, when The Fault in Our Stars movie came out and John was "bullied off Tumblr". This manages to be a podcast episode about both a niche internet beef from over a decade ago and the big questions of how humans handle fame.
  12. This gardener makes lovely videos. (After Gerald last week, can you tell how I'm trying to retrain my algorithms?)
  13. The shortlisted photographs for last year's comedy wildlife awards.
